Richard Martin-Nielsen
This is a simple homepage, harking back to early days of the internet.
It brings together a few things about me.
Professionally
I’m a Canadian diplomat, employed by Global Affairs Canada.
This is not an official website published nor endorsed by the Government of Canada.
Personally
I live in The Hague, the Netherlands. I have lived abroad in Cameroon, Hungary, Belgium, Denmark, Lithuania, the UK and the USA.
I am married to Janet Martin-Nielsen, a historian of science during the Cold War. Read her first book or her second book!
Hobbies
I like to sing. I am currently between choirs. Most recently I discovered Shapenote and sang occasionally with an Ottawa group. In The Hague I have started playing the French Horn again after almost thirty years away from the instrument, and I have joined the Bataafs Symfonikeorkest.
I code. In the past I’ve coded for profit and for research. Several years ago I coded a Baby Activity Logger for iOS; it is no longer available from the AppStore. More recently I’ve worked on a bot to boost selected toots on mastodon – I call it an #icymiBot, and I run ICYMI (ADN) about Arms Control, Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (ADN). The ICYMI (ADN) has its own website.
I keep some others on a separate Projects website.
Movement
Living in Ottawa, I cycled or walked on a daily basis. Now in Vilnius I cycle or walked to work each day. For four years in Vilnius I commuted by bike, four seasons of the year. Now in The Hague, that’s just normal.
In Canadian winter, I have skiied and snowshoed to work. (That was a very snowy week.)
